CCIW Names Guzman, Goldstone and Steele Football Players of the Week
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Mike Guzman from Augustana, Joel Goldstone of Millikin and Geoff Steele of Elmhurst were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Football Players of the Week for their performances Saturday, Sept. 10.
Against Central of Iowa, Guzman, a native of Oregon, Ill., rushed the ball 30 times for 220 yards with one touchdown, a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter. he averaged 7.3 yards per rush and also returned one punt for eight yards and one kickoff for 11 yards. The 220 yards by Guzman is the eighth best single game total in Augustana football history.
Goldstone, a sophomore linebacker and native of Moline, Ill., played a tremendous game against Wartburg in the first start of his career. He and his defensive teammates held Wartburg to just 192 yards for the game, and just seven points after Wartburg beat Millikin 36-21 in 2004. Individually, Goldstone led Millikin with nine tackles, including one for a loss of seven yards and an interception he returned for 21 yards. He also deflected a pass.
Steele, a sophomore from Downers Grove, Ill., had a busy day in Elmhurst’s 52-6 win over Benedictine Saturday night. He converted all seven of his extra point attempts and also booted a 27-yard field goal in the process. He also dropped one his five punts inside the 20-yard line.
The CCIW football season continues next Saturday, Sept. 10, as Carthage hosts Lakeland, Elmhurst hosts Concordia, North Central opens its season against Benedictine and North Park hosts University of Chicago. Augustana faces Catholic on the road, while Ill. Wesleyan continues its season at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Wheaton opens its season at Gustavus Adolphus.
